Assignment:
Scenario:
You have been hired by a local advertising agency to run an anti-smoking
campaign. You have several days to collect relevant data on the effects of
smoking, to analyze the cost associated with smoking, and to present it all in a
way that will attract the attention of students.
Directions:
Collect data on the costs of smoking.
Using software, calculate:
 | the yearly cost for a teen who smokes 5 cigarettes per day |
 | the yearly cost for a teen who smokes 1 pack per day, 2 packs per day.
(you will need to find out information about costs per pack for both expensive
and cheaper cigarettes.) |
 | the lifetime cost for a smoker in each of these categories who begins at
age 14 and quits at age 30. |
 | the lifetime cost for a smoker in each category who begins at age 14 and
smokes until death at age 65. |
Collect data on the health effects of smoking
Using the internet,
 | collect information about the diseases associated with smoking, |
 | and the death rates from those diseases. |
Collect data on teen smoking
Using the internet,
 | Find information on teen smoking over the past 10 years, |
 | Look for trends – is it getting worse or better |
For your final product
 | Create some kind of display/website/advertisement that will get your
information to your audience |
 | Choose a way to display your data: charts, graphs, tables, etc. |
 | Include a summary of your findings, tie it all together for the reader in
a paragraph or two that describes your the overall message. |

graphics/ pictures that you use that are non-public. |
 | As you search for this information, evaluate your sources. Be able to
defend why you chose to believe the information you are reading and reporting. |
